The Ghana International Women’s Club (GIWC) has donated items worth thousands of Ghana Cedis to the Osu Children’s Home to support their upkeep.

The items donated include bags of maize, gallons of oil, boxes of canned tomatoes, soft drinks and biscuits.

They also added pharmaceuticals items, spades, shovels, detergents and antiseptics. The rest of the items donated were a wheel chair and 30 bunk beds with mattresses.

According to the club President, Jacqueline Ahomka-Lindsay, every year the group donates to 8 welfare groups over the Easter and Christmas periods. This year, the beneficiaries include The Accra Psychiatric ward, Dzorwulu Special School and the Osu Children’s Home.

She said: “They had quite a lot of needs. They wanted beds because there were not enough beds for the whole wards that they have. So, with the kind donation of Ash Foam, we were able to supply 33 bunk beds which is a total of about GHC 22, 000. They also wanted provisions and drugs. We got support from some of the drug companies in making sure that we can donate to the children so that’s what we do. We make sure without fail, on top of whatever new projects that is coming on, we still do those welfare presentations.”

Jackie again noted that the group has a very strong follow up team that makes sure the items donated are used for their intended purposes. She said: “we go around and check all the donations that we’ve given and check that they are being put to right use. We have our names inscribed on the items as well. These welfare organisations and homes know that we are very vigilant in our follow-up so they ensure that whatever we gave is actually used for the people. So we don’t just donate and walk away, we come back.”

The Ghana International Women’s Club is made of women from all over the world presently living in Ghana. They have a membership of 80 women. The focus of the group is to support women, children and the vulnerable in society

According to the club President, membership into the club can be done via direct application or through recommendation by one or two existing members. She added that: “We are made up of strong selfless women and even though we may have busy schedules, we are ready to support and sacrifice time and resources for the needy. Everything we do is voluntary and out of our own expense. So, anyone who wants to become a member should be ready to sacrifice their time and other resources.”

The club express their gratitude to the following companies: ASHFOAM, Letap, Unicem Ghana Ltd, GR Pharma Industries, Gokals Mass Industries, Beko Ltd, Electroland, Kanem Industries, Essie Essel Koomson, Mabel Senanu and Hazem Youssef for their immense support and sponsorship.
