Six Tunisian stowaways have been arrested at the Port of Tema by the Port security in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service.

The six were on board a vessel that came to berth at the Tema Port from the Port of La Goulette in Tunisia to discharge clinker.

The stowaways were said to have told officials that they were escaping from economic hardship in their country.

One of the stowaways who was not in good condition received medical attention at the Port Clinic. They were also fed by the port authority after they complained of hunger.

The Port Security Manager, Lt. Col Joseph Punamane, said the GPHA has improved security systems that will fish out such individuals who want to hide in vessels to stowaway from Ghana’s Ports.

He said appropriate means would be used to return them to their country.

Earlier this year, the vigilance of the Port Security led to the arrest of four people, who attempted to stowaway from the Tema Harbour.

They were found on board the vessel m/v “AS Carelia” at Berth 1 of Meridian Port Service which was leaving for Holland at the midnight of Thursday, February 8, 2018.
