The Department of Communication Innovation and Technology (CIT) of the University for Development Studies (UDS) is to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) to deepen its relationship for a joint communication programme.
This is to enhance the capacity of students trained at the UDS Communication Department to meet job requirements in industry.
The decision was made when the Head of Department of CIT, Dr. jasper Ayelazuno, paid a courtesy call on management of NAFTI in Accra to deliberate on initiatives that will help churn out more qualified communication graduates for industries in Ghana and beyond.
Speaking to the B&FT, Dr. Ayelazuno noted that communication has become a major part of human society with the introduction of modern technology.
“Modern technology has helped to enhance effective communication in the country and beyond, and therefore we must also ensure training more qualified personnel to ensure our graduates deliver well on the job market,” he stated.
According to him, training future communication practitioners cannot be achieved without requisite logistics for the students to practice what is taught in class.
He stressed that efforts are being made by the department to acquire communication gadgets for print, radio and other aspects of the industry.
Dr. Ayelazuno noted that the industries in Ghana are not doing well, due to lack of qualified communication practitioners employed in some of the various industries.
He stressed that most students admitted are very talented, but logistical constraints are hampering effective academic work in the tertiary institutions.
He therefore appealed for support to establish a communication laboratory to train more graduates for jobs in industry to boost the country’s economic activities.
“We can only enhance the capacity of lecturers and students through refresher courses and workshops when supported,” he added.
He reiterated the commitment of CIT’s management to liaise with NAFTI so as to ensure the welfare of the country’s future leaders.
The HoD – who was received by the Rector of NAFTI, Prof. Linus Abraham and Dean of Studies Mrs. Ramatu Dadzie – expressed gratitude to the department for the initiation.
Prof. Linus noted that NAFTI is ready to collaborate with any institution to help churn out more qualified graduates.
He said the institute also trains the manpower in establishing their own businesses to augment current jobs in the country, and that the collaboration will help train the students to create job opportunities for themselves without relying on government.
He gave assurance of support to the department in its acquiring necessary logistics for training students.
“We are ready for an exchange programme with our lecturers and students to enable them acquire more knowledge in the field of study,” he noted.
