As part of measures to increase security in the country, the Ministry of Interior has directed that all Members of Parliament (MP) be assigned police bodyguards.
According to the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, who briefed the media in Parliament, Tuesday, October 13, some 200 police personnel have been deployed to provide personal security for MPs from now till the end of year.
According to the Minister, the directive is a temporary measure to protect the legislators from crimes targeted at them for the period, while the ministry comes up with other measures to provide full security for them and their homes.
“What we have proposed is that between now and the end of the year, we are going to provide additional 200 police personnel to be part of the Parliamentary Protection Unit”,
“Subsequently, we should get 800 police added so that each Member of Parliament will have security at home in the day and night,” the Minister said.
This comes following the recent attack and murder of Ekow Hayford, former MP for Mfantseman Constituency in the Central region, which happened last week.
