MTN invests GH¢600,000 in CSR in Upper West Region alone …celebrates Kobine with the people of Lawra

MTN has invested over GH¢600,000 through corporate social responsibility projects in health, education and economic empowerment in the Upper West Region alone, Nii Adotey Mingle, MTN’s Northern Sector General Manager, has said.

“Some of the projects embarked on in this region, through MTN Ghana Foundation, include the Shea Butter project for the Sung Suma Women’s group at Kpaguri, MTN/ UNDP ICT Centre of Learning at Hamile, Northern Ghana Water & Sanitation Project: this involved the sinking of 20 boreholes for 20 communities in Wa East and Lawra districts.

The other projects are the NAWAG B-GREAT: literacy improvement project by Nadowli Women Advocacy Group that involved 115 schools and Gwollu Community Library,” he said.

Addressing the Chiefs and people of Lawra at the 41st annual Kobine Festival, Mr. Mingle added that the latest projects by the foundation are the scholarship opportunity for Science, Mathematics and English teachers to pursue first degree and masters programs and the Heroes of Change project that recognizes and appreciate selfless people who through their own resources have helped to transform their communities.

“Sixty teachers nationwide are already benefitting from the scholarship. I encourage the people of this region to grab the opportunity to make their lives brighter through these offers,” he added.

Celebrating Kobine

A couple of weeks ago, MTN, joined the people of Lawra, in the Upper West Region, to celebrate the 41st edition of the town’s annual festival, Kobine. It was a moment to recount history, discuss the present and plan for the future.

In attendance were the Chiefs, led by Naa Puewele Karbo II and people, government officials, diplomats, and other dignitaries including a high powered delegation from MTN, led by Nii Adotey Mingle, the Northern Sector’s General Manager.

“Year after year during the festival celebration, you have sought to showcase your rich and diverse cultural heritage while fostering peace and unity among your people,” Mr. Mingle said.

He noted that for seven years now, MTN has consistently enjoyed the privilege of sharing in the joy and success of this town and they are not taking anything for granted in the coming years.

“MTN Ghana’s sponsorship of the Kobine festival for the seventh consecutive year is a demonstration of MTN’s commitment to brightening the lives of the people of the Lawra traditional area and to also thank you for your loyalty to the brand.

We remain the market leader in the telecoms industry to date because of your support to our business. We shall endeavour to provide world-class products and services to meet the needs of our valued customers,” he noted in his address.

MTN, as part of the support package for the festival presented a cheque of GH¢5,000, recharge cards worth GH¢500, a drink hamper and MTN souvenirs and also supported all the key activities including the Culture and Heritage Day celebration, health walk, grand durbar, football gala and bicycle race.

This year alone, MTN has joined several communities to celebrate their festivals. Some of these festivals are Homowo, Oguaa, Asogli, Kuntum, Odwira, Aboakyir and Hogbetsotso. The support offered by MTN to festivals across the country has become an annual event on its calendar because of the company’s conviction that festivals helps preserve the nation’s diverse cultures and unites people.

He urged the town folks to take advantage of MTN products and services such as Sunday Special or Super Sunday promotion where customers can dial *5050# to activate for 50p or GH¢1 for on-net calls on Sundays; MTN Jara, specially created exclusively for the three regions of the north where you dial  5055# and enjoy; and Spin the Wheel: send ‘start’ to 5040 and stand the chance to win power banks, 4G enabled phones, mobile money and cars among other prizes and the daily charge is 0.50p.

Others include Nkomode Promo: *315# to activate and the 1st minute of calls costs 26p then the remaining minutes are for free; Akwaaba Promo/Magic Number: double bonus on recharge for new subscribers for the first six months, you select a number to call for free for the first six months of joining MTN by dialling *550# to activate; and MTN Pulse: *567# offers incredible and flexible voice /data packages.

The last, but certainly not the least is MTN Mobile Money: enhanced payment options and platforms for online shopping, transfer of money to family members or for business transactions, Insurance premium. Payments can also be made for utility bills and airtime top up among others.
