Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, (Presec- Legon) has emerged winners of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) 2020, edition after brilliantly dominating their colleagues Adisadel College and Opoku Ware in the grand finally.
On winning the competition, Presec Legon has now extended their tally of trophies won to six and continues to hold up to their unbeaten record as the school with the most wins followed closely by Prempeh College who has also won the NSMQ competition four times and St. Peters SHS in third place winning the competition on three occasions.
After 11 good years of drought within which period they have made it to the finals two times and lost, Presec ones again has the bragging rights as the best second Circle school in Ghana.
Right from the word go, Presec established their authority as they managed to lead at the end of each of the five rounds.
At the end of round one, Presec scored 14 points to be in the leading position, followed by Opoku Ware, with nine points and Adisadel who trailed with seven points.
Again Presec dominated round two ending it with 18 points followed by Opoku Ware who maintained second spot with eight points and Adisco in third place again with seven points.
Round three ended with a twist between second and third placed schools. With Presec leading again, 23 points, Adisco managed to take the second spot with 15 points, pushing Owass to third position with 14 points.
Round four followed in similar order with Presec leading with 33 points, Adisco with 28 points after performing wonderfully in the Yes/No session, Owass trailed with 18 points.
The final round appeared to be very predictive to everyone except Adisco boys who were hoping to pull a surprise. Presec continued in the winning position as they got two of the riddle questions correct to increase their score to 36 points at the end of the competition. Adisadel College came second with 31 points and Opoku Ware placed third scoring 21 points.
Presec- Legon walked away with the trophy, Gold medals and GH₵40,000 cash prize to the school, GH₵20,000 to the contestants and GH₵20,000 to the teachers totalling GH₵80,000 from organisers. They also received GH₵40,000 cash prize from headline sponsors ABSA Bank, among other awards.
Second placed Adisadel College received Silver Medals as well as cash prize of GH₵30,000 to the school, GH₵17,000 to contestants and GH₵17,000 to the teachers, totalling GH₵64. They also received GH₵30,000 as sponsorship package from ABSA Bank, among other prizes from the several other sponsors.
Third placed Opoku Ware received Bronze medal in addition to a total GH₵50,000 which is broken down as GH₵15,000 to contestants, GH₵15,000 to teachers and GH₵20,000 to the school. They also received GH₵20,000 from main sponsor ABSA Bank, among other prices.
To many, the competition in the grand final this year is beyond the three competing schools to the three regions represented; Greater Accra, Ashanti and Central Region. Therefore, a win for Presec-Legon is a win for all schools in Greater Accra in general.
