The SNV Ghana Green Employment and Enterprise Opportunities (GrEEn) Project, in partnership with the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality in the Western Region, has organised a Job Fair on the theme ‘Creating Sustainable Jobs Through Green Economy’.

The GrEENn Job Fair, which was attended by about hundreds of youths, entrepreneurs, employers and exhibitors among others, is one of the activities to complement government’s job creation efforts and create a platform for job seekers to be matched with job openings.

The fair is also for the youth to learn about opportunities in the green economy, seek career guidance and counselling, get their Curriculum Vitae checked as well as connect with employers.

SNV Ghana is implementing this four-year joint project with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), with funding from the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF) and Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Dorcas Hammond, Skills Development Adviser of SNV Ghana, explained that the project is being implemented in the Western and the Ashanti Regions with an objective of addressing the root-causes of irregular migration by supporting sustainable and climate-resilient local economies, green and decent jobs, as well as enterprises in regions of departure, transit and return.

She noted that inadequate career counselling, guidance and preparedness has rendered many youths incapable of identifying and taking advantage of existing opportunities, even at the district level.

She pointed out that the devastating effects of the climate crisis continue to intensify, and SNV believes jobs which can withstand and help tackle climate change are crucial to the future of Ghana and its citizens.

“Entrepreneurship in the green economy will be promoted through interactions with seasoned green entrepreneurs to inspire participants to start their own green businesses, and also furnish participants with green opportunities within Wassa Amenfi East Municipality to guide their career decisions,” she added.

According to her, from September 2020 two district level job fairs have been organised at Ahanta West and Nzema East Municipalities in the Western Region, and employment information and opportunities have been made available to over 300 participants.

Helena Appiah, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Amenfi East Municipality, commended the organisers for collaborating with the assembly for the project. She is optimistic that the project will create more job opportunities in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality to reduce the unemployment situation in the country.
