The National Insurance Commission (NIC) has inaugurated a new office in Cape Coast to serve the public and regulated entities in the Central Region.
“The setting up of the office in the Central Region is to facilitate engagement with policyholders on any insurance related matters,” Dr. Justice Yaw Ofori, Commissioner of Insurance said at the opening of the office.
He explained that the mandate of NIC, includes the protection of policyholders, the effective supervision of insurance and carrying out public education on insurance. “The Commission, under my leadership, will ensure insurance is understood by all even at the basic level,” he said.
He indicated that there is an arrangement with the Ministry of Education to introduce insurance as a non-scoring course at the tertiary level. This, he noted, would enable the individual understand insurance better and be able to explain to their various friends and families. In some few years to come, the message of insurance will be understood by all.
Kingsley Adjei Boahen, Chief Director at the Central Regional Coordinating Council who spoke on behalf of the Regional Minister, Justina Marygold Alhassan, welcomed the NIC officially to the region. He assured them of the Coordinating Council’s preparedness to work with the Commission at all times.
Osabarima Kwesi Atta II, Paramount Chief of Oguaa Traditional Area, who was the Chairman for the inauguration, emphasised the need for all Ghanaians to call on the NIC when they have non resolved issues with their insurance companies. He tasked all guest at the ceremony to preach the benefits of having an insurance cover for their life, home, property and businesses.
Nicholina Naa Yeye Ladzekpom, Central Regional Manager of the NIC added that regulator will collaborate with all stakeholders in the region to ensure that all fake insurance operators are weeded out of the system.
“The insurance companies are well supervised to comply with all regulatory directives and that the NIC will reach out to the various communities in the region going forward to ensure all gets proper education on insurance before signing on,“she said.
She admonished the public to inspect the licence of any insurance agent before accepting to take up a policy.
