Radiation Protection Institute

The RPI is licensed and/or authorized by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA), Ghana, to carry out the following technical services.

a.       Secure the health and safety of employees who work in radiation prone environments such as X-ray facilities and with radioactive/radiation sources in hospitals, industry, research and in teaching, by monitoring such persons through the provision of personal radiation dosimetry services,

b.       Provide training, guidance and information in nuclear and radiation safety and security,

c.       Carry out radiation safety assessments on existing and prospective nuclear installations, and on radiation emitting devices in Medicine, Communication, Industry and other relevant facilities,

d.       Conduct performance/leakage testing and calibration of radiation monitoring and nuclear related instruments including Density Guages, Dose Rate Meters, Thermo-Lumniscent Dosimeters (TLD) Cards, Radiation Survey Meters, Digital and Analogue Personal Dosimeters, Radioactive Contamination Monitors, etc., using an International Atomic Energy Agency accredited Secondary Standards Dosimetry Laboratory,

e.       Test/analyze food items, industrial raw materials and scrap metals for radioactive contamination on their arrival at or before their departure from the port,

f.         Provide environmental monitoring/assessment of radon, naturally occurring radioactive materials in oil/gas and mining industries, radio-frequency radiation and extremely low frequency radiation in the telecommunication and relevant industries.

g.        Collection, and safe management of radioactive waste materials, and

h.       Test drinking water for radiological safety using gross alpha/beta analysis.

Accordingly, the public and the following categories of operating entities (prospective and existing ones) that use nuclear and/or radiation technology are required to collaborate with RPI for technical support.

Institutions that use radiation sources / radioactive materials and / or nuclear technology include:

1.       Medical Facilities that Utilize:

-            X-ray Equipment for imaging of the human body/goods and    analysis of ems

-            Nuclear Medicine Units for diagnosis and treatment of diseases

-            Radiotherapy Units/Centres for cancer treatment, Linear Accelerators, and

-            Non-Ionizing radiation devices to mention some of them

2.       Manufacturing, Construction, Mining, Oil and Gas Exploration Industries, etc. that:

-            Utilize nuclear gauges.

-            Utilize other radioactive sources and / or nuclear based systems in their operations, and

-            Operate in environments with naturally occurring radioactive materials.

-            Utilize radio frequency emitting devices.

3.       Research and Teaching Entities that Utilize:

-            Nuclear and/or radiation emitting systems and / or equipment in their activities.

4.       Businesses that Import and Export Food Items, Industrial Raw Materials, Scrap Metals, etc.

-            They are required to perform radioactive contamination tests and/or analyses of their imports and exports before leaving the ports of entry and exit respectively.

NOTE: All the Technical Services that we render attract a service charge. All fees and charges are approved in accordance with the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022 (Act 1080)
