Agogo Omanhene  passes on after 51 years of reign

The Agogo Traditional Council, together with the Queen Mother and the Etia Aduana Royal Family, regretfully announce with deep sorrow the passing of Nana Kwame Akouku Sarpong, Omanhene of Agogo in Asante Akyem.

In accordance with Asante tradition and custom, the Queen Mother of Agogo, Nana Serwaa Afrakoma Kusi Oboadum, together with the Agogo Traditional Council, formally conveyed the news of his passing to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, at the Manhyia Palace on March 26th, 2026.

The revered chief, Occupant of the Ofori Krobon Stool, served the people of Agogo, Asante Akyem for 51 years. His stewardship strengthened the traditional identity and values of Agogoman, while embracing modern pathways for growth and enhancing the development of Asante customs.

Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong’s reign marked an unwavering dedication, wisdom and dignity and stood as a symbol of unity.

Nana Akuoko Sarpong was a distinguished figure in our nation’s history, exemplifying the highest standards of leadership, integrity and patriotism. During his notable political career, he served as Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North under the Popular Front Party from 1979 to 1981.

He later became a member of both the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administrations, serving in various capacities, including Minister of Health, Minister for the Interior, Presidential Staffer for Chieftaincy Affairs, Chairman of the Commission on Culture and subsequently as a Member of the Council of State.

He was a steadfast advocate for national unity, democratic progress and economic transformation within his community. His passing is a profound loss to the nation.

Beyond his political service, Nana was also a respected Legal Practitioner and a firm advocate for education.

The Agogo Traditional Council extends its deepest condolences to the family, his wife of 65 years Mrs Ellen Adwoa Ampofoa Sarpong, his children, his friends and associates, Asante Akyem Agogoman and all who were touched by his life and leadership.

The Traditional One Week Observation Rites where a gathering will be held on June 4th, 2026, at Agogo, Asante Akyem. The public is invited to join in honouring his memory, celebrate his legacy and perform the customary rites befitting his stature.

Details of his final funeral rites will be communicated in due course.

It is the Council’s prayer that the Almighty God grants him eternal rest and comfort to those he leaves behind.
