The Car Rental Association of Ghana (CRAG) has formally presented a comprehensive proposal to the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dzifa Abla Gomashie aimed at strengthening collaboration between the car rental industry and the tourism sector.

The presentation, held at the Ministry’s offices in Accra, brought together key stakeholders from CRAG and officials from the Ministry to discuss innovative ways to enhance tourist mobility and improve service delivery across Ghana’s travel ecosystem.

CRAG’s proposal outlines a strategic framework to integrate licensed car rental services into the national tourism infrastructure. The Association emphasized the critical role of safe, reliable, and professional transport in shaping the visitor experience, especially for international tourists exploring Ghana’s cultural heritage sites, eco-tourism destinations, and urban centers. The proposal also advocates policy reforms to streamline licensing, improve road safety standards, and promote digital booking platforms for car rental services.

Speaking at the meeting, CRAG President Michael Sarpong the CEO of St Michael Car Rentals, highlighted the Association’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s tourism growth agenda. “We believe that a well-regulated and empowered car rental sector can significantly boost tourism by offering convenience, safety, and accessibility to travelers. Our proposal is a call for partnership and innovation,” he stated.

He further noted that CRAG members are ready to collaborate with the Ghana Tourism Authority to develop joint promotional campaigns and training programs for drivers.

In response, Dzifa Abla Gomashie commended CRAG for its proactive engagement and acknowledged the importance of transport services in the tourism value chain. He assured the association of the Ministry’s willingness to review the proposal and explore avenues for collaboration.

“Tourism is a multi-sectoral enterprise, and transport is a key enabler. We welcome CRAG’s initiative and look forward to working together to improve the travel experience for both domestic and international tourists,” the Minister remarked.

The proposal also includes recommendations for the establishment of a national car rental registry, the introduction of a standardized code of conduct for operators, and the creation of designated pick-up and drop-off zones at major tourist sites and airports. CRAG believes these measures will enhance professionalism in the sector and contribute to Ghana’s reputation as a welcoming and well-organized destination.

As Ghana continues to position itself as a leading tourism hub in West Africa, the collaboration between CRAG and the Ministry of Tourism could mark a significant step toward modernizing the country’s transport infrastructure and elevating service standards. The association has pledged to follow up with technical consultations and stakeholder workshops in the coming months to refine the proposal and ensure its successful implementation.
