In an initiative to promote community safety and well-being, Republic Bank Ghana has presented 50 life jackets to schoolchildren at Fanaa in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

The life jackets donation aligns with the bank’s corporate social responsibility under its ‘Power to Make a Difference (PMAD)’ initiative to contribute positively to the communities it serves. This is consistent with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG-3) –  Good Health and Well-Being, to which the bank is committed.

The presentation took place at the Weija–Gbawe Municipal Assembly, where representatives from Republic Bank, personnel of the Assembly and some residents were present for the ceremony. This donation underscored the bank’s dedication to building meaningful relationships with the communities it operates in and to demonstrate its mantra as a ‘Bank with a Heart’.

Claudia Koranteng, a member of the Marketing and Communications Department at the bank, expressed optimism at the impact of the donation, when she said: “At Republic Bank, we believe in investing in the well-being of the communities we serve. The provision of life jackets to the schoolchildren of Fanaa is a small, yet, significant step toward ensuring the safety of individuals, especially those living in areas prone to water-related activities”.

In May 2023, nine schoolchildren from the Fanaa community drowned while crossing a river on their way from school. Media reports indicated that this incident was due to the inadequate number of life jackets. Schoolchildren are compelled to go by boat to the next town to access education because of lack of schools in Fanaa.

Receiving the life jackets on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, Charles Odoom – the Weija-Gbawe Municipal Director for Education, expressed gratitude to Republic Bank for the kind gesture. He added that the life jackets would enhance safety measures for the schoolchildren.

By providing this essential safety equipment, Republic Bank aims to contribute to the reduction of water-related incidents and promote a safer environment for the people of Fanaa.
