MTN Ghana has organised a forum to interact with its valued customers at Kasoa New Market in the Central Region, as well as solicit feedback from a cross-section of stakeholders including market queens, traders, members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union among others.

The platform was also to thank customers for their support over the past 25 years; educate and update customers on measures being taken to improve the network; and the various social investments being implemented in the country.

Kennedy Ofosuhene, Corporate Services Advisor of MTN, in a brief history of the company explained that: “We have evolved over two and half decades with different brand names: Spacefon, Spacefon Areeba, Areeba and MTN. The brand evolved along with its tag-lines ‘Communication for the nation’ to ‘the heart of your world’ and finally to ‘everywhere you go’. From 20 staff, now MTN has over 2,000 employees with indirect employment of over 500,000”. he said.

According to him, the company started with mostly foreign leaders at the beginning; but now MTN has an over-95% Ghanaian employee base – adding that MTN has created between 500,000 to a million jobs including hundreds of thousands of airtime resellers, mobile money agents and mobile money merchants. MoMo alone has over 200,000 agents.

Again, he said the company has supported businesses to grow in leaps and bounds while making health, education and commerce accessible to many Ghanaians. “We have enabled productivity and economic growth by giving SMEs and the informal sector the tools to build new businesses and grow existing ones; and partnered about 18 banks for mobile money service,” he said.

He added that its corporate social responsibility unit, MTN Foundation, has consistently invested in the communities – over 154 major projects executed which have impacted about four million people among others.

Joseph Havie Arthur, Mobile Money Territory Sales Officer for Kasoa, spoke on MoMo fraud and security and assured customers that MTN’s MoMo system is secured and safe. On security tips, he pointed out that MTN Mobile Money staff will not under any circumstance ask for customers’ MoMo PIN code.

He advised MTN customers not to use their MoMo PIN for a very long period, but rather change it at least every month.
