The Rotary International Club, in collaboration with its Tema local chapter, has constructed a mechanized borehole water system for the benefit of the Balagonno CHPS Compound in the Ga-South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.
The project, which is classified under the Rotary-USAID partnership water and sanitation programme, cost the humanitarian services providing club about GH¢37,000 and was completed in November 2020.
The project is targeted at enabling regular water supply to the health facility and the Balagonno community in general, as the locality is yet to be connected to the Ghana Water Company (GWCL) network, making it difficult for the health professionals to deliver healthcare.
The project components included mechanized borehole of 98 meters depth fitted with 1.5 horsepower submersible pump, control panel for the pump with associated automation protection devices, protection chamber with cover for the well head, 180 meters length PVC HDPE transmission /distribution pipelines and 3000 litres capacity water storage tank on a concrete tower (elevated water storage tank).
President of Rotary Club Tema, Rotarian Seth Otu-Larbi, handing over the project, indicated that the club was called upon to provide assistance to the health facility which has been bedeviled with serious water crises and as an organization that is dedicated to humanitarian course, resources were mobilized together with some partners to ensure the water situation is addressed.
According to the Rotary Club of Tema, despite the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic soon after the project construction commenced, Joissam Ghana Ltd and Samko Electrical Works, the construction firms that worked on the project, showered resilience and work progressed steadily on the project making it possible for it to completed almost within schedule.
Senior Staff Midwife, Balagonno CHPS Compound, Delia Yayra Kwame, on behalf of the health facility expressed a heartfelt gratitude to the Rotary Club and all its partner institutions that made it possible for the facility to gain access to safe clean water to perform its operations.
