The ‘Girls Action for Socio-Economic Transformation (GASET), an initiative of Faith Ladies Club, an Accra-based women’s football club has been launched at the Wembley Park in Sukura -a suburb of Accra.
The main aim of this initiative is to help girls in football train in alternative outside sports such as solar panel installation, phone repairs and computer repair as well as be sensitised on sexual reproductive health rights.
The initiative, is being funded by KGL Foundation as part of their ‘Tackling Social Development Concerns in Ghana’ – TASODECOG, a program where each individual or organisation has easy access to basic needs and to empower communities within which they find themselves, thereby, creating sustainable change.
Speaking to the audience, Roseline Amoh, Vice Chair of the Women’s League Board – GFA emphasised on discrimination and less attention when it comes to women in football, therefore, the need to add another skill rather than depending solely on football is a necessity.
Mrs. Anastasia Kumado, Ablekuma West District Health Doctorate also educated the young ladies on Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), how it is contracted, the dangers involved and also their sexual rights.
“I will encourage young ladies here to concentrate on their chosen career path and also be open to learning other entrepreneurship programs to better their future rather than depending on men”, she added.
In an interview with B&FT, Edwin Osmond- Lamptey, PRO of KGL Foundation, said that as part of their Corporate Social Responsibilities, supporting the girl child is one key responsibility the Foundation pays attention to, reason why they took upon themselves to support the cause.
