Poetry Corner: The Future in Yesterday

0

Yesterday was like today

When you smiled in your head

“Oh there are many more days

Days and still more days ahead”

Yesterday when you said

“Better days are surely coming

Better times up on the horizon”

Yesterday was the day you said

“Tomorrow will be another day

Tomorrow is when I’ll do all

All I didn’t do yesterday”

Yesterday was when words were hollow words

When full emptiness filled your words

Yesterday was when you did nothing

Tangible nothing

Thinking to do it today

Thinking yesterday was too rainy

Thinking today will be so sunny

Yesterday was when you  crossed two arms

…close to an open chest

When you clasped two palms

…between two thighs

Yesterday was when you featured the future

Just in your mind

When you figured out the future

Just on your fingers

When you flipped through the future

Just on your flipside

Yesterday was when you proposed out of no purpose

When you postponed what you propounded

When you abandoned what you promised

When you promised only to improvise

Yesterday was when you tarried lazily

When you veered into inactivity

When you planted the tears of today

Tears you feared yesterday

II

Yesterday was when you ought to have prepared

When you should have dared

Dared to clear what blurred your vision

Yesterday was when you  ought to have yearned

When you should have revved up your gears

Geared to tread on a path to a mission

Yesterday was when you ought to have been steady

When you should have been ready

Ready to put your hands to the plough

…to plough to sow

…to go for gold

Yesterday was when you ought to have remembered

When you should have learned

That time and tidal waves

Waited for no man’s slumbering ways

That the hours that made the days

Abated not in procrastinating days
