The Tamale Youth Choir (TYC), a non-denominational choral group based in the Northern Region of Ghana, is set to launch its maiden concert and album in Tamale on Saturday June 25, 2022 at the Radach Conference centre.

The maiden concert titled: ‘Our Musical Journey’, includes a collection of 10 choral songs which are renditions of familiar traditional Ghanaian songs, as well as some original compositions. The event will be streamed live on all the TYC social media handles.

The event on the theme: ‘the Role of the Northern Youth in the growth and development of Choral Music in Ghana’, is aimed at raising awareness on the group, as well as showcase their unique singing ability.

It is also to portray some songs in the local dialect, as well as use music to promote the cultural heritage of the region. The event will also bring together some stakeholders including religious organisation and leaders to grace the occasion.

James Varrick Armaah, a Ghanaian music composer, will be at the event. He is the founder and executive director of the Harmonious Chorale Ghana. He is best known for composing popular Ghanaian choral song ‘Asem Papa Bia Ma Te’ also known as ‘Oye’, ‘Nea Wo De Me Abe Dur Nnie’, ‘Nkagye Kuruwa’, ‘God is Good’, ‘Praise Him’, among others.

In an interview with B&FT, the Director of the Choir, Samuel Dowaana Mensah, said the unveiling is to contribute in building a solid growth of choral music to a higher standard, and help identify talent among the youth and develop them on bigger platforms. He said that the choir was established to thrill music lovers through folk and patriotic songs as a way of instilling patriotism in Ghanaians, as well as to spread the word of God.

According to him, the choir will also take advantage of the concert to raise funds to purchase some needed instruments and other resources to enhance their work. “We are inviting all to come and support us as we take choral music in Northern Ghana to a higher level. Indeed, music is food for the soul, and we ought to feed it well. So come with friends and family and let us have a musical experience,” he said.

The choir was established in 2017 by a team of exuberant individuals led by the founder Samuel Dowaana Mensah. The motive behind its establishment is to create a platform for as many young people who are willing to display their talent and skills in the field of choral music in Northern Ghana.
