UWSA educates community on COVID-19…donates relief items to beneficiaries

The Universal Wonderful Street Academy (UWSA), a non-governmental organization in Jamestown in Accra, has sensitised parents in the Jamestown Otublohun community on the need practice strict hygiene during the coronavirus pandemic.

The UWSA also distributed essential items to about 500 people in the community worth thousands of cedis. The items include, nose masks, hand sanitisers, liquid soaps, bags of water, sanitary buckets, foodstuffs (rice, cooking oil, spaghetti) among others.

Addressing beneficiaries of the gesture, the Developmental Chief of Mantse Ankrah Royal Family of Otublohum, Nii Kwanchi II (Louis Wonder Doe), who is also the Founder and Director of the UWSA, said “it was important that the academy sensitise and educate the community about the coronavirus and offer a helping hand particularly to parents of the children.”

Apart from the items which were donated, the UWSA also offered money to all beneficiaries of the items to aid them through the pandemic. Nii Kwanchi II, reminded the community of the need to take the precautions seriously and to ensure that personal hygiene particularly handwashing is practiced regularly.

He took the community and the beneficiaries through practical handwashing by demonstrating how to effectively wash and clean the hand with soap. “Apart from regular washing of hands, social distancing is also necessary in preventing the virus from spreading,” Nii Kwanchi said.

The beneficiaries expressed excitement towards the gesture and thanked the management of the UWSA for the kindness. Nii Kwanchi II thanked donors and partners of the UWSA, who made the donation in Ghana possible.

The UWSA provides free tuition in basic arithmetic, English, African drumming and dancing to more than 200 underprivileged children in the Jamestown and its environs. It also provides free meals and medical care to the children and supports them with stationeries to aid their educational wellbeing.
