The Millennium Excellence Foundation (MEF), under the leadership of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has launched the 5th edition and 20th anniversary of the Millennium Excellence Awards (MEA).
The MEF, served by honourable governors as judges over the years, has opened nomination for the 35 competitive categories for this year’s awards which marks the 20th anniversary and over 1,650 individuals and organisations have been nominated. Per the criteria of MEA, list of nominations will be published in the newspapers in the coming weeks for the public to select individuals and corporate institutions deserving of the MEA.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, the Life Patron of the Foundation, represented by one of his sub chief, Nana Dr S. K. B. Asante, stated that the MEA celebrates excellence without mediocrity and bias, and honoured only deserving patriots of humanity, men and women contributing their quota to a rising Africa with passion.
President, Millennium Excellence Foundation, Ashim Morton, extended his heartfelt gratitude to HRM Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his unwavering support and wise counsel that has helped to uphold the legacy of the foundation.
“We want this year to be a milestone in enhancing the Millennium Excellence Foundations profile in the world. As such, all patrons and supporters will have to align themselves with our mandate, past laureates and soon to be mentioned 2020 laureates to strive for excellence,” he said.
He noted that the foundation will like to celebrate its 20th anniversary together with all its African laureates and governors who have ensured acceptance for its global nominations. “The Lifetime Africa Achievement Prize 2020 and the Presidents Outstanding Youth Prize will be celebrated in the coming months,” he stated.
The Millennium Excellence Foundation is headed by a Life Patron, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who ensures the sustainability of its mission. It is headed by the Founder, Ashim Morton, whose goal is to drive the principles of sustainable development in Africa.
Asantehene will be present in Accra where over 10,000 citizens will gather in July 2020, to celebrate the anniversary of the foundation and those who have earned the distinction to be selected.
The Foundation focuses most of its resources in three key areas – Agriculture and Food Security; Water, Sanitation and Hygiene and Science [WASH]; and Innovation and Technology.
The three areas of focus are headed by the President, Board of Governors, Advisory Technical team and program managers. This Executive Team, serve a five-yearly term and responsible for overall management of the Foundations Prize Ceremonies and Consultancy Services it provides.
The MEA, held every five years has honoured in the past, distinguished personalities such as; ace investigative Journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas for his exceptional public service, President John Dramani Mahama, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, the Nigerian Poet and Writer, Wole Soyinka, Ghana’s Olympic Gold Medallist Martha Bissah, among others.
