The Head of Virology at Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Prof. William Ampofo, has said a number of laboratories are being established across the country to enhance the country’s testing capacity, as the infectious disease continues to spread.

In addition to Noguchi and the Kumasi Center for Collaborative Research (KCCR), the initial laboratories that were handling the testing of COVID-19 samples, two more laboratories have been added.

This includes the Tamale Testing Centre, which is expected to handle the testing of COVID-19 samples from Northern, Savannah, Upper West, Upper East and North East Regions of the country.

The other has been established in Takoradi, in the Western Region, and is expected to handle COVID-19 cases emanating from Western North, and parts of the Central Region.

Prof. Ampofo said the Takoradi facility is being handled by the Veterinary Services Directorate in collaboration with the Public Health Laboratory of the Efia Nkwamta Hospital, the Western Region. The facility is expected to be fully operational from tomorrow.
