ADB partners boxing authority to unearth new talent in sport

The Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) Limited has partnered the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) for the second edition of the National Juvenile/Amateur Boxing and Professional Championship Fight league.

The Boxing league, dubbed ‘Bukom Fist of Fury’, is organised by the Ghana Boxing Authority, Ghana Boxing Federation and the Ghana Juvenile Boxing Board, and geared toward unearthing new boxing talent.

Speaking at the media-launch in Accra, the Deputy Managing Director of ADB, Alhassan Yakubu-Tali, said ADB is proud to partner the Ghana Boxing Authority and its affiliate groups to organize the league, which aims at producing professional boxers to lift the flag of Ghana high in boxing.

“I am hopeful that by this boxing league a new set of professional boxers will be discovered, and once again Ghana will bounce back onto the international boxing stage,” he expressed.

Mr. Yakubu-Tali is optimistic the league will once again help Ghana produce great boxers like ‘Professor’ Azumah Nelson, David Kotei – a.k.a D.K. Poison, Ike Quartey, and Joshua Agbeko – whose exploits put Ghana on the International boxing stage. Mr. Yakubu-Tali reiterated ADB’s association with the event and announced a sponsorship package of GH¢100,000 to enable organisation of the boxing league.

He said the bank’s association with the event is due to the job-creation potential of the league to produce more professional boxers within the various boxing division. He disclosed that to become a professional boxer requires the appropriate training and discipline to win local and international fights; thus, he is optimistic that the league will instil discipline into boxers who partake in the fights.

Mr. Yakubu-Tali commended the organisers for not focusing on only the traditional boxing town of Bukom and its environs, but rather the entire country.

A former President of the GBA and now a Consultant to the authority, Lawyer Moses Foh Amoaning, expressed his gratitude to ADB for their support and called on other corporate organisations to support Ghana boxing. He added that through boxing Ghana had won 10 world titles, and the future for boxing looks promising.
