Bonomanso plunge pool: newly discovered tourists’ site in B/A

For now, Brong Ahafo Region is the second largest in terms land area (39,557 km square), after the Northern Region. It is among the few geographical locations in Ghana endowed with different natural tourists’ sites.

Notable among the tourists’ sites in the region are the Kintampo Waterfalls, Fulla Waterfalls, Boaben-Feima Monkey Sanctuary, and Buoyem caves and bats colony. There are other relatively ‘unknown’ and less marketed ones scattered across the length and breadth of the region.

The sedimentary rocky nature of parts of the forest-savanna transition zone-covering Kintampo, Nkoranza, Techiman, Wenchi and Atebubu makes formation of caves and waterfalls common features around that part of the country. Besides the notable waterfalls in the region, there are other similar beautiful creatures around.

One of such sites is a plunge pool at Bonomanso in the Nkoranza North District. Unlike some other tourists’ sites which are mostly located at obscure places, the Bonomanso plunge pool is located on the shoulder of the Techiman-Kintampo highway; the pool is just about 100 metres away from the roadside.

The pool which is about 20×10 meters in shape has been naturally formed in the belly of huge rocks. The water falls from about seven meters from the top. There is also a huge potential to develop another pool downstream. The immediate environment of the pool has good-looking rocks rooted around.  Until recently, it was not an open place for general public visitation; the beautiful creature which was under the canopy of the bush was more or less a scared area.

It took the intervention and foresight of a youth group at Bonomanso “Quest Crew” who realized the importance of developing the God-gifted pool as a tourists’ site. They cleared the bush around and desilted the pool which is about four meters deep. With the support of the Traditional Council and district Assembly, they have improvised a few summer hats to host visitors.

The Spokesperson of the group, Isaac Owusu told B&FT that the youth mostly organize pool parties at the site during public holidays and other festive occasions, indicating that patronage has been very encouraging since they started about last twelve months ago.

The potential of the newly discovered site is gradually attracting the attention of private investors. A private developer has started construction of a guest house, just around of the pool site. The Bonomanso community has therefore expressed its willingness to partner investors to develop recreational facilities at the site so as to make it a preferred tourism destination in Brong Ahafo and the country at large.
