Standard Chartered Bank Ghana Limited, a leader in digital banking services with over 120 years of banking experience in Ghana, has donated 60 desktop computers to Accra Academy Senior High School.
The donation event, held under the theme ‘Empowering the next generation of leaders’, forms part of the organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities aimed at empowering people in the communities within which it operates.
The Head of Internal Audit-StanChart, West Africa, Harry Dankyi, echoed the need to consider digitisation as an integral part of preparing the young for the future since the future of banking is digital.
“Standard Chartered Bank is committed to communities that it serves, and today we have reiterated this by donating to Accra Academy these state-of-the-art devices to refurbish the science laboratory.
“We entreat students to make the most use of these computers for their practical and research work, to increase their knowledge in science and technology,” he said.
The headmaster of Accra Academy, Rev. Williams Foli Garr, expressed his profound gratitude on behalf of the school to StanChart; indicating that, indeed, government alone cannot make education better in the country without the aid of corporate organisations.
“Last year, Accra Academy borrowed computers from outside to support final-year students in their elective ICT examination. The 60 computers received today will go a long way to improve ICT learning and practical work in the school,” he said.
Furthermore, StanChart engaged the students on digitisation and financial literacy as part of activities to mark the donation.
The students took part in a Futuristic Challenge to develop an original digital product that is implementable and has content to solve a problem. The winning team of three individuals received a Samsung tablet each.
The Head of Corporate Affairs-Marketing, Asiedua Addae, said StanChart CSR initiatives focus on education, entrepreneurship and empowerment. Hence, as banking is adopting a lot of technology to make banking simpler and convenient for clients, it is relevant to empower students who are the future generation to use digital platforms available to them.
Standard Charted Bank is often referred to as a leader in the digital banking sector after emerging winner of the ‘Global Finance World Best Digital Consumer Bank’ award for seven consecutive years, with the last one being in November 2018.
