The leadership of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) paid a courtesy call on the Business and Financial Times (B&FT) on Thursday, to familiarise with management and discuss possible areas of partnership between media and the institute.
The Rector of GIJ, Kwamena Kwansah-Aidoo, (PhD), congratulated the paper for its accuracy and standards in reportage as well as quality of journalism it has maintained over the years.
He said the visit was also for familiarisation purposes and to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
The rector touched on possible areas of partnership, particularly with the institution’s upcoming 60th anniversary celebration this year. He said: “Media businesses are direct beneficiaries of the training that we offer to people in GIJ”.
Chairperson for the 60th Anniversary Committee, Madam Lawrencia Agyapong, said an endowment fund has been set up to expand the institute and run its general activities.
She therefore appealed for the B&FT’s support and contribution toward realisation of this aim.
She said: “We recognise that government alone cannot take up the challenge of training and expanding the school. We need to have the tools in order to train our future journalist to deliver for the nation’s development”.
On her part, Dr. Edith Dankwa, Chief Executive Officer of the B&FT, welcomed the GIJ delegation and congratulated them on their 60th anniversary celebrations.
She acknowledged the important role that the institute plays in the journalism sector and its positive contributions to the media community in Ghana.
Dr. Dankwa supported the idea of an endowment fund, pledging the company’s support toward success of the 60th anniversary celebrations.
She said: “We can support you in so many ways, especially through publicity. Most of the companies have communicators, and most of them come from GIJ. We will therefore think through it and see how best we can support”.
The CEO also used the opportunity to talk about collaborations between the institute and B&FT in the area developing students’ interest in venturing into the area of business journalism. She also said the institute could turn out more student interns for the B&FT.
“We don’t have too many business journalists. So, we can come up with specific research data that can benefit the students and find ways of getting them to read. We can arouse their interest in business journalism at an early stage. We can also have some of them as interns and broaden their scope during the internship,” said Dr. Dankwa.
Together, the two groups explored other areas of mutually beneficial partnerships which would see students of GIJ benefit from special packages exclusive to the GIJ.
