AirtelTigo commits 1% of sales to boost education in 3 regions

AirtelTigo has announced an educational development initiative aimed at improving the lives of children in communities through education in three regions of the country – the Ashanti, Bono and Brong Ahafo Regions.

The initiative, dubbed ‘Yεn Nkᴐsoᴐ Nti’, according to AirtelTigo forms part of its long commitment to communities in these three regions, and will invest one percent of its proceeds from airtime recharges by its customers in the regions into development of educational facilities.

It will run over the next three months, and support and enhance public schools in disadvantaged communities.

The Chief Executive Officer of AirtelTigo, Mrs. Mitwa Kaemba Ng’ambi who disclosed this after a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace, noted that depending on the initiative’s success it will extended to other regions of the country in future.

She said: “Investing in education is our way of giving back to this community that has been very supportive of AirtelTigo. It is our way of making long-term societal impacts, the benefits of which will be reaped for many years to come”.

She explained that: “Our children are the future, and we believe that education holds the key to successful development of any nation. Through this initiative, we expect to touch several schools within the region that need support”.

The selection of schools to be reached through this initiative will be conducted by a committee that evaluates the needs of each. Public schools in the region, as well as members of the community, are encouraged to submit applications to or AirtelTigo shops across the regions.

“We are confident that our commitment to improving quality education will foster values that can produce pupils who consciously use their talents to contribute to Asanteman development.”

She explained that AirtelTigo has been contributing to the development of communities in which it operates, including the Ashanti Region, by promoting education.

Before the merger between Airtel and Tigo, she said, the former brands renovated two schools and built four others at select deprived communities across the country. These schools included the St Joseph Basic School in Obuasi and Ehiawoanwu Basic School in Ejura of the Ashanti Region, and the African Faith Primary School at Banda Ahenkro in the former Brong Ahafo Region.

She expressed appreciation to the Asantehene and people of Asanteman for supporting AirtelTigo’s business in the region, while assuring them that the company will continue to introduce innovative products and solutions to make life simple.

The company also donated GH₵20,000 to the Otumfuo Education Fund, as part of its commitment toward education and also to celebrate with the Asantehene on the occasion of his 20th anniversary.
