Yaw Donkor wins maiden Campari Bar Academy Award

Emmanuel Yaw Donkor, a bartender at Burger & Relish Osu, emerged winner of the maiden Campari Bar Academy Award.

The bar academy awards is aimed at encouraging innovation among bartenders within the cocktail sector. Participants were challenged to prepare different kinds of cocktail each week  for a six months period.

Country Brand Ambassador, Campari, Perry Amu, addressing the media during presentation of the award, said Campari is determined to train and help bartenders across the country to increase their understanding of the cocktail business and how to serve under hygienic conditions.

“So, this competition started about six months ago to influence the cocktail culture in Ghana. It consists of three series and four challenges for 40 bartenders from 10 selected outlets.

“We gave them different challenges or task to perform each week, whilst we educate them on how best to  serve the drinks, prepare cocktails and relate to customers, after which we score them on how best they performed.

“Yaw Donkor happens to come out with highest point which makes him the overall winner,” he said.

“Bumble Bee”, is the name of the cocktail Yaw prepared which won him the award. It comprises; Wild Turkey Whiskey, Frangelico, Passion fruit, Lemon, Pineapple and American honey, giving it that classical flavour and unique taste that the organisers were looking for.

Yaw Donkor, receiving the price, expressed his profound gratitude to Campari for choosing him as the winner which comes with the opportunity to make his first travel outside Ghana.

“I have been in the cocktail business for the past five years and have prepared different kinds of cocktails over the years, combining it with my fashion. My boss asked me to take part in this competition six months ago when they brought the offer.

“I did not know I was going to win but I was hoping to be one of the best and today, I am not just one of the best but actually the best which gives me great joy,” he said.

Yaw Donkor’s prize is to travel to Campari Academy, in Milan-Italy to undergo a one week training on cocktail preparation and the business of cocktail after which he will come back as a Campari certified trainer.

The Campari  Bar Academy Award program was also rolled out in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa for the same six months period and the winners will all be at Milan to learn how to upscale in the cocktail business  to be  at same level with other European counterparts.
