Ashesi university students and its president,Dr. Patrick Awuah has hosted Fiber Optics Inventor and Nanotechnology Expert Dr. Thomas Mensah to its sprawling Campus on Wednesday 14 November.
Dr. Thomas Mensah gave an exciting Lecture on Moving Ghana into the 21st Century and the Role of Technology and Innovation.
Dr. Thomas Mensah who has registered the Silicon Valley of Ghana as an institution in Ghana after officially launching it at the Kofi Annan ICT Center in Accra was pleased to address Faculty and Students at Ashesi University.
During his lecture , he explained that there are 6 main universities whose Vice Chancellors or Presidents are part of the Governing Board of the Silicon Valley of Ghana.
These are University of Ghana, Legon Accra, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Kumasi, University of Cape Coast, University of Developmental Studies Tamale, Ashesi University, Accra, Regents University and Science and Technology Accra.
The Launch of Silicon Valley of Ghana has attracted international attention and caused Google to select Ghana as the Location of its First Artificial Intelligence Lab on the continent.
Dr. Mensah also touched on drone technology development in Ghana where he stressed that drones and autonomous vehicles are driven by artificial intelligence.
According to him, he will team up with Silicon Valley of Ghana to organise the first drone competition in Accra amongst all the Universities who are members of the Silicon Valley of Ghana.
He also stated that each university will have a Silicon Valley Lab to support this effort and other scientific innovations on their campuses.
The winner of the drone competition will have to exhibit a drone that can deliver medical supplies to the nearest hospital or clinic in Ghana with the grand Prize of $50,000 going to the First Place winner.
Silicon Valley of Ghana will also help develop Software Curriculum that can be used to train 300,000 SHS students in Ghana.
Both Dr.Mensah and the Dr.Awuah explored ways of using Silicon Valley Ghana to boost industrialization and job-creation.
Dr Thomas Mensah is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors USA. Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Fellow of the African Scientific Institute and a Fellow of Ghana Institute of Engineers. He has several pioneering Patents in Fiber Optics and has authored 4 Books on Innovation. His latest book is Nanotechnology Commercialization an International Text Book.
