Nyonkopa , BC Zurich to spend over $7500 USD to feed the vulnerable for one year

Nyonkopa Cocoa Buying Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of Barry Callebaut, the world’s leading manufacturer of high-quality chocolate and cocoa products is to spend more than $7,500 USD to feed the inmates of the Edwenase Rehabilitation Center in Kumasi, home for physically challenged students.

The Company has presented food items among others for the first quarter which includes, rice, cooking oil, palm oil, fish, tomatoes and onions. The rest are beans, salt, soap, washing powder and ice chest etc. to store food.

The prefect of the Centre Ebenezer Tetteh who received the items on behalf of the inmates expressed his appreciation for the Company’s enormous support to the Centre over the years and implored the Company to continue supporting them.

The Managing Director, Dr. Joshy Varkey tells Business & Financial Times that the Company is committed to its corporate social responsibility activities and has offered to feed the inmates of the rehabilitation centre for one year.

According to him, the amount set aside to feed the inmates for one year is drawn from the Holiday Care Fund of Barry Callebaut , Zurich and Nyonkopa’s Needy Project, a subsidiary and the local company. In an interview he said that the Company is extremely mindful of its community support responsibilities and will not relent in its effort to assist the community in which they operate.

Nyonkopa still continues  with its  Needy Project – where  all employees contribute minimum one day salary every month  – to support  the  farming communities in which they operate;  to support  orphanages, CHIPS compounds, schools , orphanages among other CSR activities and hopes to take  it to higher levels by taking  the purchasing clerks of the company  into this scheme from this season.

In a related development, Barry Callebaut , Zurich and Nyonkopa Cocoa Buying Limited being a very socially responsible company has also renovated the washrooms as well as the sanitary areas of the Edwenase Rehabilitation Centre at an estimated cost of GH₵ 40,000 for both the male and female washrooms in last year , with the modalities. The washrooms have been fitted with new water closet, durable taps and wash basins and neatly tiled to provide improved hygiene for the inmates.
