183 young lives saved since 2008 through the Children’s Heart Foundation

Every year statistics from the Ghana Health Department show that 7000 new-born babies are diagnosed with congenital heart disorders commonly known as “Hole-in-Heart.”

At least a third of the parents of these children are unable to pay the US$6000 – US$9000 open-heart surgery required to restore their children’s health and many as a result die due to lack of funds.

The Children’s Heart Foundation Ghana (CHF Ghana), made up of six trustees and three patrons, was formed to address this need in supporting these families by providing funds to pay either the full cost or shortfall on behalf of the parents, that ensures the children get the life-saving operation they need; at the same time providing hope and relief to the families who are battling childhood heart disease

“Every child and every family are different and so we try to meet their needs individually and, on a case-by-case basis. We get to know the child and their family so that we can best support and assist them while they go through the trials of fighting childhood congenital heart disease.”

To date, The Children’s Heart Foundation Ghana has paid for the surgeries of 183 children with surgery cost averaging US$8000.

The ladies quietly raise money by appealing to captains of industry and other organizations through various fund-raising events (the biggest being their highly-acclaimed annual formal ball), and by being 100percent transparent with donors.

Donors get to participate in the “Paid in Full” Presentation Ceremony to the parents after the children’s surgery bill has been settled. They also get to meet and interact with the children and parents before and after the surgery; and hear the expressions of gratitude from the parents whose children have benefited from their generosity.

In addition, CHF trustees keep their overheads to a minimum. Most of the cost of administrative and welfare outreaches are handled by the trustees at their own expense despite their very busy schedules.

Donors, such as Ecobank, Barry Callebaut, Interplast, Safebond Company Ltd., Geodrill, GHL Bank, African Environmental Research Consultancy, Bond Savings and Loans, Tropical Cables, Hollard Insurance, Newmont Ghana, Acacia Health Insurance, Labadi Beach Hotel, Ghana International School, Tema International School, Premium Foods, Enterprise Group, Compassion In Action and The Whitaker Group, etc. know that their contributions will be put directly to the payment of a child’s surgery.

We would also like to thank the companies who support our yearly fundraising events with services In Kind, Auction and Raffle Prizes that ensure we keep our cost to the bare minimum.

The 183 children who have had their open-heart surgery paid for by The Children’s Heart Foundation Ghana since 2008, are eternally grateful to the Trustees and their donors for their unwavering support.
