Nyonkopa Cocoa Buying Limited, a fully owned subsidiary of Barry Callebaut, the world’s leading manufacturer of high-quality chocolate and cocoa products has been adjudged Agribusiness Company of the year 2018.
The Company was presented with this prestigious award at the Ghana Business Awards organized by the Ministry of Business Development held recently at the Gold Coast Kempensky Hotel in Accra and was in recognition of the Company’s exemplary leadership in the Agribusiness industry.
Nyonkopa was identified and nominated in other award categories making the Company a potential winner of those categories. These include SME of the year, Excellence in CSR and Best Growing Company.
The Managing Director of Nyonkopa Cocoa Buying Limited, Dr. Joshy Varkey, in an interview said the Company is committed to service efficiency and quality as well as a responsibility to impact society particularly the communities in which the company operates. According to him these recognitions rather motivate them to intensify their work efficiency to improve upon the Company’s performance.
The award scheme sought to reward businesses that had played a defining role in moving their industry forward and have demonstrated achievement across a wide variety of domains including sustainability, operational excellence, and innovation among others.
Other salient objective of the award scheme was to identify projects and individual achievements that have enabled their Business to set themselves apart from their competitors and that have produced clear and compelling value and other relevant results, as well as bringing together players in the business industry and recognize achievements from local and international companies involved in promoting the business sector in Ghana.
In an earlier development, Nyonkopa (Barry Callebaut) had been recognised as the Best Corporate Socially Responsible Company of the year 2018 under the Ghana’s Business Quality Awards. The award was presented to the company by the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Ghana in collaboration with Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Business Development at Movenpick Ambassador Hotel a couple of weeks ago.
Nyonkopa is one of the fastest growing company in the Ghana and specially in its segment and has 474 employees on board as well as 6000 purchasing clerks and 850 community coordinators – all in 2 years of inception and actively present in over 100 cocoa districts with 74 000 registered farmers. Apart from UTZ and RFA certifications, Nyonkopa is the only company with its own certification standards, cocoa horizons and among the largest tax payers in LBCs sector in 2 years.
The Company by introducing and implementing the community coordinator style of functioning who are the face and voice in the communities, has generated 850 jobs for youngsters last year and would increase this in the coming years.
