NKD Foundation, the charity arm of NDK Financial Services Limited – a licensed Non-Bank Finance House, in collaboration with Total House Clinic, has embarked on a five-week free prostate and breast cancer screening for clients.
The first of the five screening sessions was held at its Osu Branch, Omanye Aba House last week , and 130 people turned up the for exercise out of which about 83, representing 63 percent were male and 37 percent female.
According to the organisers, the aim of the prostate and breast cancer campaign is not only to medically examine clients but to also disseminate information and educate the public on the alarming nature of these diseases and the need for people to undertake self-examination and visit hospital for regular examinations.
General Health Practitioner and Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Total House Clinic, Dr. Padiki Derban, commended NDK for such a significant initiative to ensure good health among its clients, indicating that the turn-out was encouraging, and that it was an indication that Ghanaians are gradually taking issues of health very seriously.
“Today, out of the 49 female screened, we had two issues of lambs in the breast but it cannot be described as breast cancer yet, it needs further examination to ascertain exactly what it is.
With the screening for prostate cancer, we normally take blood samples to the laboratory to run a test that we call Prosthetic Specific Antigen (PSA), after which we get to the individual clients with the reports depending on the result,” she said.
NDK’s Deputy Managing Director, Kuorkor Ayisa, in an interview with the B&FT said: “Our campaign coincides with the global awareness month of Prostate Cancer, Blue September and Breast Cancer, Pink October. We hoping to screen a total of 500 clients during the five-week period but with the turn out today, we are optimistic of recording more than that at the end”.
The next edition of the free health screening dubbed Blue September and Pink October, comes off on Wednesday 26th of September 2018, at the Tema Community-One Branch of NDK Financial Services.
