Intrigued by Service, a hospitality and destination management consultancy, in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority, has launched Ghana’s maiden Guest Experience Masters Awards (GEM Awards 2018).
The GEM Awards aim to be an excellent representation of the niche international hospitality industry in Ghana – and eventually the rest of Africa.
Wilhelmina Appenteng, Lead Consultant of Intrigued by Service, in her address said the awards will reveal and recognise some of the most dynamic individuals and teams who are carving the industry’s growing landscape; whether they work at a hotel, restaurant or spa.
“These GEMS will be awarded uniquely based on feedback from staying guests in the form of verified online reviews, direct booker feedback and peer nominations, and will be a testament to the fact that our guests are the judges that really matter,” she said.
Nominations have officially been opened and the awards have been classified into 24 categories: Best Business Hotel, Most Spoiling Spa, Best Game Changer, Best Ghana Escape, Outstanding Catering on Demand, Best Family Hotel, and Best Night-Life.
Other categories to be contested include Best Guest Experience, Best Welcome Experience, Best Dressed Hotel, Value for Money Hotel, Rising Star Hotel, Outstanding Street Food and Outstanding GEM Hotel 2018, among others.
Individuals or teams working in hospitality as well as boutiques, big city, lifestyle or hybrid hotels and serviced short-let apartments or branded residences among others are qualified to participate and compete in various categories.
The CEO of Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Akwesi Agyemang, said GTA welcomes such an initiative and will provide the needed support for the organisers to ensure that GEM continues for a long time and helps industry practitioners adhere to international standards.
“We need these awards in the industry to make practitioners feel like somebody is actually measuring what they are doing.
“The GTA has Tourism Awards which give recognition to service excellence, but we need more of such hands in this our industry. I am quite excited that we have the GEM Awards coming up, so that we can partner with them and see how we can improve on the customer service experience in most of our establishments,” he said.
Amanda Prah, an Intrigued by Service consultant, emphasised the GEM Awards’ prestigious value, saying: “The awards come with global recognition through Intrigued by Service’s international partnerships; and to ensure credibility of winners and/or preclude issues of favouritism, an independent auditing firm will be hired to collate and declare the rightful winners”.
