SolarTaxi, an E-mobility company providing affordable and sustainable transportation, has been visited by the Former President of the Swiss Confederation and current Swiss Minister for Environment, Traffic, Energy and Communications, Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga.

Federal Councillor Sommaruga visited the company to witness first-hand operations of the company, which is into the design and local assembling of electric vehicles (Bikes, Tricycle and Cars). The company also sells/rents/leases, and also provides charging points and maintenance for electric vehicles.

Federal Councillor Sommaruga was impressed with operations of the company, which employs about 90 percent female engineers. She was taken through the process of assembling and maintenance of electric vehicles, bikes and tricycles.

She said Switzerland is a global pioneer of climate protection, having set a standard for international climate projects that respected both human rights and nature – therefore, the operations of SolarTaxi are among those that her country applauds.

The CEO/Cofounder of SolarTaxi, George Kwadwo Appiah, said the company is grateful for the visit and encouraged to know that their effort has gained enough global attention to attract a visit from the Swiss Minister for Environment, Traffic, Energy and Communications, Federal Councillor Simonetta Sommaruga.

“Swizerland is big on renewable energy and we are grateful for this visit. We hope it translates into something big. We have existed for 3 years and it has not been easy, but for the steady growth we have seen there is hope for expansion and we are seriously working at it,” Mr. Appiah said.

He added that the company is looking at training more engineers, and as a result there is a need for some financial support.

He indicated that SolarTaxi is also planning to go into large commercialisation of tricycles for agriculture communities, with the hope of drastically reducing the cost of transporting foodstuff.

While in Ghana, Federal Councillor Sommaruga signed two landmark agreements with her Ghanaian counterparts to boost bilateral and economic development cooperation between the two countries in the fight against climate change for the years 2021-2024.

The first agreement was the allocation of CHF65 million by the Swiss government to Ghana for economic development, while the second was to pilot the operationalisation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and mobilise funds internationally to implement the GH-NDCs.
