President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the election petition filed by presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama.

Responding through his lawyers, President Akufo-Addo said the petition is “incompetent, frivolous and vexatious”.

After the declaration of Akufo-Addo as president in the 2020 elections, Mr. Mahama filed a petition at the Supreme Court on December 30, 2020 to contest the results.

Mr. Mahama is appealing to the court to annul the results that led to the declaration of Akufo-Addo as president, and subsequently organize a second round of election since no candidate garnered the 50 percent plus 1 as required by the constitution to become president.

But reacting to the petition in a 12-page document, President Akufo-Addo argued that the claims are not supported by the facts pleaded in the petition.

“That in the circumstance, the petition is incompetent, frivolous and vexatious and discloses no reasonable cause of action in terms of 64(1) of the constitution.”
“2nd respondent accordingly invites this honourable court to determine that the petition is incompetent, frivolous and vexatious and discloses no reasonable cause of action in terms of 64(1) of the constitution and sets the issue down for legal arguments.” The response said.
